Chicka Chicka Boom Boom ideas

I love to read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom with my students. It has such a fun rhythm and rhyme that my students giggle and then enjoy joining in! I read it at the beginning of the year as we are starting to learn the letters and letter sounds. I created this display this year to showcase the letters that we are learning and to remind the students which letters we have already covered. The kids enjoy taking turns adding the letters to the Chicka Chicka tree each day as the new letter is introduced.

Although there are so many great activities to do with Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, this craft has become one of my favorite. To make, use a paint brush to create the tree trunk. Then each child can either dip his hand in green paint or use a paint brush to paint his hand green and then make 2 handprints, one with fingers to the right and one with fingers to the left. Finally, I give each child the letters for his name all mixed up to glue ‘falling’ out of the Chicka Chicka BOOM BOOM tree. We used foam letters that I had in my classroom, but you could used paper-punched letters, letter stamps, etc… This becomes our first display for the hallway, which turns out so cute and colorful!

We also make a ‘Touch Alphabet’ to display in the room. Each child gets one paper die cut letter from the alphabet and something to glue, tape, or stick onto the letter that begins with the letter’s sound. You could also send these home for each child to complete. After the letters are complete, I staple them to a bulletin board, and children can then ‘touch’ the alphabet, tracing each letter and saying the object that is on each letter.
